Good Morning Brothers…
Anytime I’m out scouting locations for treestands or ground blinds, I’m looking for certain signs which I interpret to be good. Deer feed over here, deer water over there, deer use this heavy cover for bedding areas, etc. Once I think I know the pattern of the area, I set up for an ambush along one of those “perceived routes”. Trapping is like this as well, the trapper is trying to think like the animal. It’s a bit more complicated than, “If I was a bobcat…where would I walk?” But the trapper is trying to ingratiate himself into the area, to get a feel for the place, before he lies down a string. I wonder how many of us have really stopped to think about this…we literally know very little about the animals we hunt from an intimate level. We can observe them, we can see the sign of their passing, we can even call or bait them in…but none of us really know “Why” an animal does what it does.
Case in point…how many of you have gone hunting on ground you were unfamiliar with…and the guide (or buddy) makes a comment like this, “Deer always come in from that direction in the morning (points with his arm to your left) and feed through this area over here (waves his other hand around in a circular motion to illustrate the spot you are standing on) and then move off between those two little outcroppings over there (points to your right). You sit in that treestand right there (points behind you), it will be like shooting fish in a barrel.” Inside, you know it won’t be that easy. However, the next morning on stand, you are watching exactly where the “pointer” told you too. The biggest buck of your life, bigger than anything ever seen at Cabelas or otherwise, surprises you by not following the script. This buck comes in from a completely different direction and catches you “not ready” to fire.
Later on, you are heard to say, “He came in from a direction that completely surprised me!”
Never do we blame the animal. Never do we refer to the animal as stupid or making irrational choices. We always feel like the animal is way smarter than us…we need to improve our understanding of the deer…not hope the deer improves its understanding of us. Rarely do we apply human reasoning to the animals we hunt…why do we do this with God?
Joshua 6: 1-5 says, “Now Jericho was tightly shut because of the sons of Israel; no one went out and no one came in. The LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the valiant warriors. You shall march around the city, all the men of war circling the city once. You shall do so for six days. Also seven priests shall carry seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark; then on the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people will go up every man straight ahead.”
A General instructs His Sargent
“Sargent Stinger…here are your instructions. Take the entire Company, and march around the city, putting the Company band of holy men in front, followed by the Company Signet, and then the soldiers. Don’t shoot, don’t play any instruments, don’t do anything but march around the city one time. Do this for 6 days. On the 7th day, march around the city 7 times, same formation as before, except now…I want the band of holy men to play their trumpets. When the rest of the Company hears that particularly long blast of the trumpets…have everyone shout in one loud voice…and the defenses of the city will fall. Got that Sargent?”
“You don’t want us to shoot?”
“I want you to do what I’m telling you to do.”
Judges 7: 5-7 says, So he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “You shall separate everyone who laps the water with his tongue as a dog laps, as well as everyone who kneels to drink.” Now the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was 300 men; but all the rest of the people kneeled to drink water. The LORD said to Gideon, “I will deliver you with the 300 men who lapped and will give the Midianites into your hands; so let all the other people go, each man to his home.”
The Evening News
“Information coming into the newsroom here is…quite confusing. It seems, the Elite Fighting Forces selection process has been altered.”
“Altered, what do you mean by that Diana?”
“Well Bob…it seems that…if my sources are correct…the Elite Forces, known as “Gideon’s 300″ are being selected based on how they drink water, not their accuracy with a bow or their strength in their sword arm.”
“How they drink water?”
“Yes Bob, the soldiers that don’t drink like a dog…gain entry into this Elite Fighting Force. Now… lets send it over to Stan for “Sports” across Palestine.”
1 Peter 1: 10-12 says, As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.
Romans 16: 24-26 says, Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith;
Angels in Heaven
“Have you heard the news…?”
“If you mean about Almighty God sending His son into that pit called earth as a little human baby…then Yes, I heard.”
“What is this supposed to mean?”
“I don’t know, it is very unsettling. But I’ll tell you this…the last bunch who decided to question God got thrown out. I don’t want to see a repeat of that.”
“Its a mystery allright…I wish I knew what God was planning.”
We should never apply our logic to God’s choices. He is God…we are not. I’m interested in other passages from Scripture…which give us pause…which make us say, “Really…!” If you have a favorite…please send it to me and I will wrap them into next weeks conclusion.
