(It would be fair to say this is Part 1 in a three part series)
Good Morning Brothers…
I’m going to assume for a moment, that most of you reading this own a weapon of some sort. The phrase “preaching to the choir” is used when their is an assumption the choir doesn’t need to hear the message. However, with this topic, I believe we all need to re-examine our priorities and listen to the message. It would be real easy to write a piece about the sheer number of gun owners in America and the impossibility to disarm the population without creating a climate of a potential political coup. I mean, lets face it, millions of Americans own firearms, but we would be no match against our own military. I’ve got to believe that the US Marines are not going to invade Kansas. If things in Washington got that out of whack I’d expect the military to seize control of the White House before it started killing citizens. The point is, our guns our safe. The real questions is, “Are our guns on safe?”
The key word in ‘Gun Control’ is not ‘Gun’….but is ‘Control.’
The talking heads out there are jumping up and down about ‘Control’…which means the responsibility for ‘Control’ needs to shift from the gun owner to some governing body. This is logic from a broken cistern, this is an attempt to pass legislation which changes the desires of the human heart. Laws do not teach wisdom.
Wisdom shouts in the street,
She lifts her voice in the square;
At the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
At the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:
“How long, O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded?
And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing
And fools hate knowledge?
“Turn to my reproof,
Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.
Wisdom longs to be sought. Wisdom longs to be found. Wisdom calls out to us with promises of knowledge. Yet…as a society we continue to turn away from Wisdom’s call. We continue to apply our own understanding to matters of the heart with regulations to the consequences. We still don’t get it.
“Because I called and you refused,
I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;
And you neglected all my counsel
And did not want my reproof;
I will also laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when your dread comes,
When your dread comes like a storm
And your calamity comes like a whirlwind,
When distress and anguish come upon you.
“Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;
They will seek me diligently but they will not find me,
Our society cries out for change. Our society expresses outrage and disgust and demands that something be done. Our society is still looking for answers in all of the wrong places for problems society cannot overcome. We continue to ignore the outstretched hand of Wisdom and attempt to draw water from wells that hold none.
Because they hated knowledge
And did not choose the fear of the Lord.
“They would not accept my counsel,
They spurned all my reproof.
“So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way
And be satiated with their own devices.
We are the “they” in ‘Because they hated knowledge.’ We have chosen to not fear the Lord. We have not accepted the counsel of Wisdom and have spurned her reproof. The results of our choices are evident, “So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way“…and we continue to eat.
“For the waywardness of the naive will kill them,
And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
The prevailing attitude of “We can do this” of our society is naive at best and negligent at worst. The cost of our waywardness is seen in the number of lives destroyed by evil. The vivid pictures of tiny caskets cover up the tragedy of broken marriages due to immorality; gloss over the realities of chemical addictions; hide the evils of greed and consumerism; and serve to point their finger at inanimate tools. Our complacency is found in trying to further regulate an inanimate tool and ignore the heart and mind that wields it.
“But he who listens to me shall live securely
And will be at ease from the dread of evil.” Proverbs 1:20-33
If we finally turn from our worldly ways and listen to the counsel of Wisdom, we shall live securely without fear from evil.
How do we do that?
As a society, we must turn toward God. We must accept the Wisdom that only comes from Him. This process does not start at the top. This process starts at the bottom. This process starts with us. When Jesus called His disciples, He called the working class, He called people like you and me. The process started at the bottom and worked its way through society. The formula some 2000 years later is not any different. Our society needs Christ. Our society needs Wisdom. Our society needs men and women willing to be missionaries to their neighbors, their friends, their co-workers, etc.
We absolutely need ‘Gun Control’, but we need that ‘Control’ to come from within the hearts of men and women which are living for Christ. Our trigger safety should be our state of mind and their is no law, by man, which will cause this effect. There is, however, a law which will cause this effect…the Law of Christ. Christ’s Law, does teach wisdom, and Wisdom is what our society needs. Our churches need to be chanting ‘Onward Christian Soldier’ as the troops are sent out to carry the message of the cross…not debates about gun control. Gun violence is a consequence of rampant unchecked evil. We need to fight against evil with Wisdom…the Wisdom which comes with Christ.
Missionaries prevail on the beachheads of darkness not because of the size of their gun but because of the size of their God. We need to stop fighting the battles of darkness with more darkness. We need to bring LIGHT to the engagement and let Wisdom have her way. We need to ignore the endless debates and deliver the good news of redemption, of salvation, of the abundant life. Lets keep our guns on safe and not get dragged down into debates where each side is arguing from an ideology rooted in darkness.
Onward, Christian Soldier…Like a mighty army…Moves the Church of God…Brothers, we are treading…Where the Saints have trod…We are not divided…All one body we…One in hope and doctrine…One in charity.
Onward, Christian soldiers…Marching as to war…With the cross of Jesus…Going on before.
